Using peer-to-peer programs like Limewire is dangerous because you do not know the person(s) on the other end. You could end up downloading a hacked version of a file that could allow them entry into your computer, store the keys you press (looking for usernames, passwords, etc), do damage to your computer, and a load of other things.



Since you have stopped using Limewire you have eliminated a very large danger to your system.



Now, if you had downloaded a hacked file it could still be lurking on your system but with AVG, Windows Firewall, and Windows Defender most those types of files will be detected/dealt-with.



With a Windows machine your vulnerability is really tied to how up-to-date you are with Windows Updates and what security software you are using. So, if you are forgetful person setup automatic updates. As for security software you have a solid program, AVG, and Windows Vista firewall is better than older versions, so leave it on unless you get a third-party firewall.



As for changing the security level of your Windows Vista firewall there really are not levels besides on/off, although I could be mistaken. To access and view your firewall settings:

Start -%26gt; Control Panel -%26gt; Security -%26gt; Windows Firewall



I personally use Spybot - Search %26amp; Destroy instead of Windows Defender which I linked in my sources. Also, be wary of pop-up anti-spyware/virus software that claims your system is %26quot;infected.%26quot; Those are almost always spyware themselves. Stick to the mainstream vendors and ask a computer-literate person their opinion when in doubt.

How safe is my firewall behind a modem router?

I've been using Zone Alarm firewall (free edition) for many years now %26amp; in all security tests it comes up as all ports in stealth mode, so hackers don't know you're actually connected. The problem is I'm no longer using dial-up %26amp; instead have a ADSL Ethernet Modem/Router- Hurricane 9200, it is now showing that ports 21, 23 %26amp; 80 are open as well as ping, the rest are showing as closed. I'm sure that beyond the router itself the ports on the computer's own IP are still in stealth mode but hackers now maybe KNOW that there is a computer there somewhere because of the router responses.



How safe is my computer, should I change to a better firewall? Although other firewalls that I tried show the same ports open (which are on the router of course). I'm having some problems recently %26amp; I'm thinking possibly I'm being targeted. All settings on the router itself were done by the telephone service operators.

The difference here is that your modem is what's showing those ports open. The Hurricane 9200 has a built in web-management engine so that you can configure it. It also allows telnet to it as well as FTP traffic. Below is a link to the products page.



There's nothing you can do from the perspective of your firewall because it's your first device that's showing up as a problem. I would check out your documentation for the Hurricane to see if you can turn these features off or at least restrict them to a specific IP Address. That would make your modem secure and you would probably show up as Stealth again as long as the modem drops the packets and doesn't simply reset them. Your firewall, however, is no more insecure because of it.



At the minimum, make sure that you password the Hurricane as best you can to prevent anyone, except yourself, from accessing it. Also, update your firmware to the latest version to avoid potential security vulnerabilities.



I checked out the manual for the 9000 and you can certainly disable the WAN side HTTP, telnet, and FTP access. That's definitely advisable. That in itself should clear up the scan results.

Hi i was wondering what would be the steps to do a vin verification in California? My vehicle id legit and had all the same vin numbers when i first got it. But i ended up getting my firewall changed. Why i got it changed is a whole different topic so please don't ask why. when the work was done, i took many many pictures. i have pictures with the original vin before the change, during the change, and the new vin after the change. i still have pieces of my original firewall with the old vin intact.



So how would i go about legalizing this? I heard you have to go to the dmv first and they will send me to the chp. where they will check the vehicle and put a different tag/plate on the door jam. is this correct? what will they check for? because my car can be completed right now, but i want to do this vin check before i paint it, and when i get it painted i will strip it down to bare metal again so i don't want to put everything back in the car if i don't have to.

the reason why is they are not technicians and have no clue what they're talking about.



I do not know what you are seeing that is telling you to change the ports on your firewall... but you need to take a look at that or have a reliable and qualified technician do so.. as it doesn't sound right. There is no special port you need to get onto yahoo answers. The port for html in general is port 80 so if you are on one page, you are on the others.



I would first and foremost make sure that your Norton suite is working properly on that computer.. make sure it is configured properly (like try setting the firewall back to defaults) and force a manual update on it to see if the update are current.



If you are still having trouble I would contact your ISP and tell them you are having problems connecting or contact Norton technical support and FAQ pages. You'd want to check with your ISP because it's possible something is wrong with a router in your area.

I've never done a heater core on a lumina, but most are buried under the dash, and usually require disassembling or even removing a good chunk of the dash itself.



They are right about the hoses though - check on the firewall (between the engine compartment and the dash) and you will see two heater hoses that are attached to the heater core. You can pull them off, and use a little adaptor to hook them together to bypass the heater (if its leaking in the car), although you won't have heat anymore.



Once you locate the hoses, then the heater core will be directly on the other side of the firewall - unfortunately it will be inside of a box (heater plenum) and that sucker is probably going to be buried somewhere in the dash.



You can check a repair manual for instructions on getting the dash out, or just dive in, and start hunting for how they hid all of the screws, bolts, clips, etc. - some are pretty easy to find hiding behind little plastic covers, you might need a torx head screwdriver set, or other tools.



The heater plenum is usually pretty easy to spot, because it will have a bunch of little ducts going to the vents, and a bunch of little control rods for changing from defrost, vents, floor, etc. - careful, because if you mess these rods up, your controls won't work right anymore.



Also be careful to make note of how you are taking things apart, keep all of the fasteners/bolts/screws - otherwise your dash will look like crap and make all sorts of annoying noises when you get it back together. (edit - I forgot, you usually have to unbolt the steering wheel and lower it down in order to get the dash out)



Most of the cars I have done this to did require you to actually remove the entire dash, or at least lean it back in order to get the plenum apart, and replace the heater core.

I have setup a Linksys VPN router at my office connected to a DSL modem (Bellsouth). My router has a static IP, and I want to get onto my office network from home using VPN. My office PC's are on a workgroup.



When I try to connect from home, using the Linksys VPN Client software, it seems to connect, but doesn't go any further after it says it is connecting to the network. when I look on my router interface, it shows me as logged into VPN. I was able to see my office LAN pc shared folders, but had to use ip addresses - host names wouldn't work?

Also, I had to disable my Mcafee firewall on the office computer I was trying to view shared folder's on in order to even ping it.



My guess is I need to change some firewall settings to prevent it from blocking VPN clients... I also need to somehow map ip my host names to ip addresses over vpn...

While in the office I presume you can access other computers by name. This is done through 1 of 3 options, WINS, DNS or LMHOST. IF it is WINS or DNS then you need to modify the LINKSYS VPN connection to provide remote computers access to the WINS/DNS server. IF it is LMHOST then you need to take a copy of that file home and add it to your computer at home.
